Paradise Cave

VerdictThe best value cave in the park for most visitors; book the 7 km tour only if you want a full, wet day underground.

Paradise Cave, Thien Duong in Vietnamese, is a dry cave in the national park. The park management board says British cave explorers found it in 2005 and were so struck by it that they called it "paradise", which became its name.

The board gives it a length of 31.4 km and a height of 60 m, with passages 30 m to 100 m wide and up to 150 m in places, and says the survey team judged it the longest dry cave in Asia. In 2011 the Vietnam Book of Records listed it as the dry cave with the longest wooden walkway.

Most visitors see the first kilometre. From the gate you walk, or ride an electric car, 1.6 km under the forest, then climb 500 m from the foot of the mountain to the cave mouth. Inside, a 1 km run of wooden stairs and walkways takes you through chambers up to 150 m wide and 100 m high.

The 7 km and overnight tours

Beyond the boardwalk, the cave operator runs guided tours 7 km in, to a skylight the board calls Gieng Troi. The route includes kayaking across an underground stream of 60 m to 100 m and wading through cold streams. The day tour leaves at 08:00 from the tourist center, explores the first 4 km in the morning, stops for lunch at the 4 km mark, then kayaks on to the skylight and is back by 16:00.

The two-day version starts at 13:00, camps at the skylight at the 7 km mark, and on the second morning stops for a mud bath at the 4 km mark before walking out around midday. Both tours include the gate ticket, the electric car, a guide, equipment, lunch, water and travel insurance.

The board does not publish opening hours for the cave, and neither does the operator's website, so call the operator's sales office on (0232) 3 818181 before you set out. Our Phong Nha Cave ticket price article compares this with the other cave tickets.

Our take

For most visitors this is the cave to see if you only see one besides Phong Nha Cave: no boat to share, one ticket with the electric car included, and the size of the chambers is the point. Save energy for the 500 m climb to the entrance and the stairs inside. The 7 km tour is a different trip, a full day of wading and kayaking, and the overnight tour has strict health and age rules, so read the conditions before you book.
