Da Nang

Central Vietnam's beach city: My Khe Beach, the Marble Mountains and the Son Tra Peninsula, with Hoi An half an hour south and Hue over the Hai Van Pass.

VerdictCome between February and May, give it two or three days for the beach, the Marble Mountains and Son Tra, and add Hoi An or Hue by road or rail.

Da Nang is a coastal city with its own international airport, which Vietnam Tourism, the national tourism site, says has daily flights to the country's major hubs. In a straight line the airport is about 3 km from the city point Wikidata gives, and the Ancient Town of Hoi An is about 25 km to the south. Vietnam Tourism puts My Khe Beach first on its list of things to do: broad golden sands that sweep south from the Son Tra Peninsula.

The same page sends you to the Marble Mountains, five limestone and marble hills with caves, pagodas and viewpoints, reached by stairs or a lift. It also points to the winding coastal road around Son Tra, through forest, quiet coves and temples, and says to look out for the Lady Buddha statue and the rare red-shanked douc langurs. For food it suggests starting at Han Market and names mi Quang noodles and grilled banh trang rolls.

How the last column is decided

These limits are ours; the source tables do not set them. A month is Drier when it has under 100 mm of rain, no more than 12 rainy days and fewer than 10 foggy days. Otherwise it is Wet (over 250 mm), Foggy (10 or more foggy days), Showery (15 or more rainy days) or Mixed. A month near one of these limits could almost have the next label, so read the numbers.

The icon beside each label pictures the month. The sun fills it at 7 or more hours of sunshine a day (the month's total over its days), sits behind cloud from 5 hours, peeks out from 3 and gives way to two clouds below that. Drops start at 50 mm of rain and grow to four long ones at 500 mm or more. A foggy month shows fog lines; a broken ring means no sunshine figure. The sun is yellow, orange in a sunny month and red when that month is also hot (a mean of 28°C or more); drops go from light to dark blue as the rain grows. The dot beside the label is the drier, mixed or wet colour of the homepage board.

The source does not define a “rain day”. Crowds, prices and storms are not part of this table.

The source does not say which years these averages cover. The regulation does not state the observation period of these tables.

Getting to Da Nang

Da Nang's airport and railway station are both inside the city, each 5 km by road from the Dragon Bridge on the Han River, where we put the centre, so a flight or a train leaves you only a 5-minute drive from it. Long-distance buses use the central bus station on the western edge, 9 km out.

Where are you coming from?

Our pick from Hanoi: Fly: Vietnam Airlines alone lists 10 to 11 flights a day, and the airport is 5 minutes from the Dragon Bridge. Overnight, SE3 at 19:20 and the 18:30 Queen Cafe sleeper bus both get in mid-morning; only the bus stops in town.

By air

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) has a domestic terminal, T1, and an international one, T2. Besides Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang, Vietnam Airlines flies a few times a week from Hai Phong, Can Tho, Da Lat and Buon Ma Thuot. For other cities, see our airports by destination guide, and for Hoi An our closest airport to Hoi An post.

From the airport

City bus 06 starts at the airport bus station, runs past the international and domestic terminals, then crosses the Dragon Bridge and follows the beach road, Vo Nguyen Giap, south to the Vietnam-Korea University. The first bus leaves the airport at 05:45 and the last at 19:25, every 30 to 60 minutes; the fare is VND 15,000 for up to 10.65 km and VND 22,000 beyond. Bus 03 runs from the same airport bus station to Ba Na Hills in about an hour, 32 trips a day, for VND 15,000 or 30,000 by distance. For the airport bus to Hoi An, see our Hoi An page.

A taxi or Grab car to the Dragon Bridge is 5 km, about 5 minutes. Xanh SM's electric taxis charge VND 30,500 for the first 2 km in Da Nang, then VND 15,300 a km up to km 12. Book in the app and check the number plate before you get in: a family arriving at night in 2023 wrote on r/VietNam that men at the pick-up area tried to cancel their Grab booking on their phone, and that the real driver then asked for a toll more than twice what their hotel said it was.

By train

Five Hanoi to Saigon express trains call at Da Nang each way every day. SE19 from Hanoi ends here at 11:35 and SE20 leaves for Hanoi at 18:00; SE21 to Saigon starts here at 07:55, and SE22 from Saigon ends here at 05:40. Our Hanoi to Hue train page has the full timetable.

From Hue the express trains take 2 h 32 min to 2 h 45 min. On the tourist train over the Hai Van Pass, HD1 leaves Hue at 07:05 and HD3 at 14:30, and HD2 and HD4 head back from Da Nang at 07:05 and 15:20; a soft seat costs more on Sundays. The Hue page has the details.

Correction, 19 October 2026: from 18 October this section said seven Hanoi to Saigon trains call here and put the slowest from Hue at 3 h 34 min; both counted trains that are in the railway's timetable but do not run or go on sale this autumn.

Correction, 20 October 2026: from 19 October this section said the express trains from Hue take 2 h 45 min to 2 h 59 min. That ran to the time each train leaves Da Nang; the railway's ticket site has them getting in up to 15 minutes sooner.

Correction, 23 October 2026: the train options at the top of Getting there gave the time each train leaves Da Nang as its arrival, 15 minutes after it gets in. SE3 from Hanoi and Hue reaches Da Nang at 10:28, not 10:43, and SE2 from Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang at 13:06, not 13:21, so SE2 from Ho Chi Minh City takes 16 h 31 min, not 16 h 46 min.

By bus

Public bus LK01 leaves the central bus station for Hue's South bus station every 14 to 15 minutes from 05:30 to 19:00, through the Hai Van tunnel, for VND 80,000 (Hue's bus company lists VND 70,000). The operator gives no journey time.

Bus 02 to Hoi An also starts at the central bus station and runs through the centre: heading south it stops opposite 151 Tran Phu, by the cathedral, and heading back opposite Han Market on Bach Dang. The whole route takes 90 minutes. Fares go by distance: VND 8,000 up to 10 km, VND 20,000 up to 25 km and VND 30,000 beyond.

From Hanoi, Queen Cafe Bus ends at 28 3/2 Street in Da Nang; the 36-bed sleeper costs VND 600,000, the 32-bed cabin VND 700,000 and the 22-bed VIP cabin VND 850,000.

Getting around Da Nang

The riverfront is good on foot: Han Market is about 800 m north of the Dragon Bridge, and the bridge breathes fire and water at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. My Khe Beach is 5 km away by road across the bridge, and bus 06 runs along the beach road. The Marble Mountains are 10 km south, about 15 minutes by car; on its way back from Hoi An, bus 02 stops opposite Non Nuoc pagoda on Le Van Hien Street. For the Son Tra Peninsula you need a car, a motorbike or a taxi, and its page explains how to check that the roads are open.

Questions travelers ask about Da Nang

When is the best time to visit Da Nang? February to May. At Đà Nẵng's weather station, 5 km from the centre, February to April are the driest months, with 24 to 35 mm of rain on about five days each, and the monthly mean climbs from 22°C to 28°C by May, the sunniest month. June to August get more rain, 80 to 140 mm a month, and are the hottest, around 29°C. September to December is the wet half: October is the wettest month, at about 630 mm on 20 rainy days, and November the next wettest. Vietnam Tourism also names September and October as warm and sunny, but on these figures we wouldn't plan a beach trip around October.

Is November a bad month for Da Nang? Vietnam Tourism describes a rainy season of long showers from November to February. A traveler who had booked Da Nang for November asked r/VietNam for tips, and one reply said:

"Most of the rain could be happening right now. Go and enjoy. Sit in coffee cafes and tour the city if it rains."

u/Fresh-Ant1149 on r/VietNam

Da Nang or Hoi An as a base? On a thread about a one-day trip to Hoi An, one reply:

"Hoi An is definitely a tourist town but personally I found Da Nang a bit sterile. Other than the beach it's pretty average. On my last trip I stayed in Hoi An and day tripped to Da Nang instead, found that much more enjoyable."

u/ktr83 on r/VietNam

Correction, 16 October 2026: from 14 to 16 October the two-day plan above still said Son Tra was closed with no reopening date. The board had reopened it on 14 October.
