VerdictCome February to April for dry days in the Ancient Town; October and November are the wettest months.
Hoi An is a small town on the Thu Bon River, about 25 km south of Da Nang city in a straight line. Vietnam Tourism, the national tourism site, says it was a major Southeast Asian trading post from the 15th to the 19th centuries, and that 844 of the 1107 buildings in the townscape are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Japanese Covered Bridge, which the site says the Japanese built around 1593 to link their neighbourhood to the Chinese one, is printed on the 20,000 VND banknote.
October is the wettest month here, and floods are nothing new for the people who live in the old town. Gemma, from Australia, arrived on 26 October 2025 with her mother and brother, partway through a 17-day trip they'd booked long before. Friends had promised the water would be gone by then. Bad weather had already pushed the family off the beach and into the old town, where they found what she called "the sea in the old town" when she told her story to VnExpress International. Their Airbnb cancelled over power cuts and rising water, the restaurants shut, and locals and hotel staff found them new rooms and moved their bags by boat. So they pulled on raincoats and waded through with other tourists, which she found "memorable and different" from her earlier visits. She was struck by how the locals took it: "They were calm, walking or cycling through the flooded areas. Life just goes on."
Vietnam Today's report on the flooded Ancient Town, published on 1 November 2025:
The town's heritage office asks visitors to buy a ticket before walking into the Ancient Town. Since 10 August 2026 the Da Nang city council has set the fee at VND 20,000 per person for each building you enter, the same for Vietnamese and foreign visitors. The heritage center's ticket notice still listed its VND 120,000 ticket on 20 October 2026 (the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple, one museum and three monuments), so ask at the booth which price applies. Among the old houses, Vietnam Tourism singles out Tan Ky Old House, built in 1741 and home to seven generations of one family.

The weather station is 22 km (14 mi)14 mi (22 km) away, so the weather in Hoi An itself can differ.
How the last column is decided
These limits are ours; the source tables do not set them. A month is Drier when it has under 100 mm of rain, no more than 12 rainy days and fewer than 10 foggy days. Otherwise it is Wet (over 250 mm), Foggy (10 or more foggy days), Showery (15 or more rainy days) or Mixed. A month near one of these limits could almost have the next label, so read the numbers.
The icon beside each label pictures the month. The sun fills it at 7 or more hours of sunshine a day (the month's total over its days), sits behind cloud from 5 hours, peeks out from 3 and gives way to two clouds below that. Drops start at 50 mm of rain and grow to four long ones at 500 mm or more. A foggy month shows fog lines; a broken ring means no sunshine figure. The sun is yellow, orange in a sunny month and red when that month is also hot (a mean of 28°C or more); drops go from light to dark blue as the rain grows. The dot beside the label is the drier, mixed or wet colour of the homepage board.
The source does not define a “rain day”. Crowds, prices and storms are not part of this table.
The source does not say which years these averages cover. The regulation does not state the observation period of these tables.

Getting to Hoi An
Hoi An has no airport or railway station: fly or take the train to Da Nang, then it is about 30 minutes by road to the Ancient Town from the airport (30 km), the station (31 km) or the Dragon Bridge in central Da Nang (32 km). The Queen Cafe buses from Hanoi and Hue and Da Nang's city bus 02 come into Hoi An itself. Most visitors stay in or around the Ancient Town or out by the beach.
Where are you coming from?
Our pick from Hanoi: Fly to Da Nang and take a taxi or Grab car: under 2 hours from take-off to the Ancient Town. The 18:30 Queen Cafe sleeper bus is the only way that stops in Hoi An, at 11:30 the next day.

By air
Fly to Da Nang (DAD); our Da Nang page has the details, and our closest airport to Hoi An post compares Da Nang with Chu Lai and Phu Bai.
From Da Nang airport
Bus 01SB, run by the Hai Van company in 10-seat vans, goes from the airport to Hoi An for VND 120,000. It leaves from the domestic terminal (T1) car park and also calls at the international terminal (T2); its times follow the flight schedule, and Da Nang's bus site publishes no timetable for it, so ask at the airport. On the way it stops at the International Convention Centre and The Ocean Estates on the beach road, and it ends at the Cua Dai pier car park, 8 km from the Ancient Town; the route list shows no stop in town.
The taxi fare in the table is Xanh SM's Da Nang rate card (VND 30,500 for the first 2 km, then VND 15,300, 14,000 and 13,000 a km in steps) applied to the 30 km by our arithmetic, before any airport fee or toll.
By train
The nearest station is Da Nang; train times are on our Da Nang page, including the tourist train from Hue over the Hai Van Pass.
Correction, 23 October 2026: the train options at the top of Getting there gave the time each train leaves Da Nang as its arrival, 15 minutes after it gets in. SE3 from Hanoi and Hue reaches Da Nang at 10:28, not 10:43, and SE2 from Ho Chi Minh City at 13:06, not 13:21, so SE2 takes 16 h 31 min, not 16 h 46 min.
By bus
City bus 02 links central Da Nang and Hoi An. It starts at Da Nang's central bus station, stops in the centre opposite 151 Tran Phu, by the cathedral, and in Hoi An calls at the Hoi An bus station on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, 2 km from the Ancient Town, and on Ly Thuong Kiet Street before running out along Cua Dai Road to the pier. The whole route takes 90 minutes. Fares go by distance: VND 8,000 up to 10 km, VND 20,000 up to 25 km and VND 30,000 beyond.
From Hue, Queen Cafe Bus leaves 7 Doi Cung Street and stops at 105 Ton Duc Thang Street in Hoi An; the bus back leaves Hoi An at 13:30 and reaches Hue at 16:30. From Hanoi the same company picks up at 208 Tran Quang Khai; the 36-seat sleeper costs VND 600,000, the 32-bed cabin VND 700,000 and the 22-bed VIP cabin VND 850,000.
Getting around Hoi An
The Ancient Town's streets are kept for people on foot and non-motorised vehicles from 09:00 to 21:30 in summer and to 21:00 in winter, and Phan Chau Trinh Street from 17:30, so walk or cycle in; bicycles are allowed. Our Ancient Town ticket post explains what you pay. An Bang Beach is 5 km by road, about 10 minutes, and the Cua Dai pier 8 km. From the pier, speedboats cross to Cu Lao Cham in 20 to 25 minutes, going out between 08:00 and 10:00 and returning at 13:30 to 14:00, for VND 350,000 to 400,000 return including the island fees; Vietnam Tourism says the islands are hard to reach from October to February, when the sea is rough.
VinWonders Nam Hoi An runs a free shuttle that picks up at An Bang Beach at 09:10 and on Hai Ba Trung Street at 09:20, returning at 18:00. The tourist bus 01DL from Hoi An to My Son is suspended for six months from 15 September 2026, so go by taxi, motorbike or tour.

Where to stay in Hoi An
We don't rank hotels and have no booking partners. These are the areas, described by what is near them.
Inside or next to the Ancient Town. The Japanese Covered Bridge is about 0.3 km from the middle of the Ancient Town.
By the beach. Vietnam Tourism says a beach is less than 10 km away and that some visitors stay at a beach-side resort and go into the old town for day trips. It names An Bang as the nearest and most popular beach and Cua Dai as the beach where most of the resorts are.
In Da Nang. Da Nang's airport is about 23 km from the Ancient Town in a straight line. My Son is 68 km from Da Nang city, against 45 km from the Ancient Town.

Questions travelers ask about Hoi An
When is the best time to visit Hoi An? February to April, if you can choose. Hoi An has no weather station of its own, and at the nearest one, in Da Nang, those are the three driest months of the year. Avoid October and November if rain bothers you: October is the wettest month there, at about 630 mm on average, and November comes next. Our Hoi An weather by month guide has the figures for every month.
When is the Ancient Town least crowded? On a thread asking whether Hoi An was worth it, one reply:
"The old town is great in the morning when you're alone. The evening was like hell for me. Outside of the old town I loved riding my biciclye around the rice fields and to the beach! Lovely town."
u/Effective_Tackle_195 on r/VietNam
Is there more to do than the Old Town? On the same thread, another reply:
"Jump over to Cham Island, 15 mins by speedboat and a whole different experience."
