Hoi An itinerary: how to spend 1, 2 or 3 days

This plan suits travellers who want the old trading town at its quietest: early mornings in the halls and houses, the hot middle of the day indoors or at the beach, and evenings by the lantern-lit river. Sleep in or next to the Ancient Town so you can walk everywhere; An Bang beach is 5 km away. Come from February to April for dry days; October and November are the wettest months and the town can flood. Order any tailored clothes on your first morning so there is time for fittings, check the next lantern night (the 14th of each lunar month), and book the Cham Islands boat and the Memories Show a day or two ahead.

  • 2 days: Days 1 to 2

Adds a dawn trip to the My Son temples, Thanh Ha pottery village on the way back and a late afternoon at An Bang beach.

Day 1

The Ancient Town, the market and the lanterns

The halls and houses open early and the crowds come later, so walk the Ancient Town from east to west in the cool, order clothes at the cloth market, and rest through the heat. Come back for a sunset boat, dinner and the lantern-lit river.

    Sight · 40 min

    Phuc Kien Assembly Hall

Cost: Per building under Da Nang's resolution from 10 August 2026; the heritage centre's VND 120,000 ticket covers five entries

Before you go in, buy your Ancient Town ticket and ask which price applies: since 10 August 2026 the city council's fee is VND 20,000 per building, but the heritage centre's notice still lists its VND 120,000 ticket (the bridge or Quan Cong Temple, one museum and three other monuments), valid up to three days. Then start at 46 Tran Phu, the hall of the Fujian community; the heritage centre gives visitor hours of 07:30 to 21:30 for the town. Walk through the carved triple gate to the main hall and the altar of Thien Hau.

Cost: Per building; or the museum entry on the VND 120,000 ticket

At 80 Tran Phu, the museum is the one that also gets you inside a 19th-century house, and it opens at 07:30. It closes on the 11th and 26th of each month, so on those dates swap in the Folk Culture museum at 33 Nguyen Thai Hoc (closed the 13th and 28th) or Sa Huynh Culture at 149 Tran Phu (closed the 10th and 25th). Vietnam Tourism lists it among the town's five top museum stops for its pottery and ceramics from the trading years.

Built in 1741 and home to seven generations of one family, Tan Ky runs right through the block from Nguyen Thai Hoc to the river. The centre publishes no hours for the house; travel guides give 08:30 to 17:45, so come early, before the groups. Find the One Hundred Birds board, a text of 100 letters with every stroke drawn as a bird, the poems inlaid in mother-of-pearl, and the flood marks on the walls; the family still lives upstairs.

Vietnam Tourism says the Japanese built the bridge around 1593 to link their quarter with the Chinese one; it is the picture on the VND 20,000 note. It reopened on 3 August 2024 after 19 months of restoration. Your ticket gets you into the small temple inside. It has been open since 1975, opens from about 08:00 to 19:00, and makes six kinds of banh mi with pork, chicken, egg or sausage and its own sauce, plus a vegetarian one. Vietnam Tourism lists it among Hoi An's banh mi stops too.

Hoi An Market, the cloth stalls and cao lau

Cost: Fabric and meals vary; bargain at the cloth stalls

Vietnam Tourism describes the Hoi An Cloth Market as more than 50 stalls stacked with fabric, so keep a cool head and bargain; tailors in town include the fabric in their price. Its advice is to order early in your trip so there is time for fittings. Then eat: Vietnam Tourism names Cao Lau Ba Be, 1 Tran Phu, for cao lau, Hoi An's firm noodles under pork belly, bean sprouts, herbs and crisp pancake, and Banh Xeo Minh Tu in the market's food hall. Rest through the afternoon heat.

The management board puts My Son 45 km from the Ancient Town; the 01DL tourist bus is suspended for six months from 15 September 2026, so go by taxi, motorbike or tour. The site opens at 06:00. The shuttle from the gate drops you by the guide desk (VND 100,000 a guide for one to five people). More than 70 temple towers of the Champa kingdom, built from the 4th to the 13th century, stand in a closed valley. Watch the potters at the wheel and try one yourself. The Terracotta Park at the edge of the village, open 08:00 to 17:30, adds a museum of Vietnam's pottery villages; its VND 40,000 workshop lets you take a piece home after 20 minutes of drying.

The steamed dumplings, shaped like a rose, are rice flour filled with minced pork, shrimp and mushrooms, topped with crisp shallots. Afterwards rest through the heat; Vietnam Tourism's own tip is to avoid the beach in the middle of the day.

Cost: Free beach; loungers and water sports cost extra

Vietnam Tourism calls An Bang the nearest and most popular beach to Hoi An, with loungers and umbrellas, parasailing, jet skis and stand-up paddleboards, and plenty of bars and restaurants. Its tip is to do as locals do and avoid the midday sun: mornings are quiet, late afternoons and early evenings busier. In the wet months from October check the sea before you swim.

Cost: Seafood is priced by weight; ask first

Stay for dinner at one of the beach restaurants Vietnam Tourism mentions, then take a taxi or Grab back into town. Ask the price of any fish or shellfish sold by weight before it is cooked. If you are doing the Cham Islands tomorrow, confirm your boat tonight: the speedboats leave Cua Dai port between 08:00 and 10:00.

Day 3

The Cham Islands, a last fitting and the Memories Show

    Cua Dai port

Cost: Speedboat VND 350,000 to 400,000 return, including the VND 70,000 island fee and a VND 20,000 cleaning fee

The Cham Islands visitor centre is at Cua Dai port, 8 km from the Ancient Town. The reserve board's reference price for a return speedboat is VND 350,000 to 400,000, island fees included; the slower wooden boat starts at VND 300,000 but heads back at 12:00. Bring cash for the day: the board says the islands have no ATMs or banks. Vietnam Tourism says the islands are virtually cut off from October to February by rough seas.

By boat, 16.5 km. Speedboat, about 20 to 25 minutes by the board's guide.

Eight islands about 15 km offshore form a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; Hon Lao is the main one. Snorkel, swim at one of the beaches, and walk or ride to the fishing village at Bai Huong. There are no taxis: motorbikes rent for about VND 150,000 to 200,000 a day, on narrow roads with sharp bends. The island community banned plastic bags in 2009, so carry your own bag. Eat lunch on the island before the 13:30 to 14:00 boats back.

Collect what you ordered on day one and try it on properly: sit, raise your arms, walk. Ask for changes now rather than at the door on your last morning. On r/VietNam one visitor in 2025 was quoted 5 million dong for a suit and pressed on every detail, yet was happy with the boots and trousers they did order, so agree price, fabric and a fitting time in writing before you pay a deposit.

Vietnam Tourism names Bale Well Restaurant, 51 Tran Hung Dao, for banh uot thit nuong: pork grilled on lemongrass skewers over charcoal, which you wrap yourself with herbs, cucumber and star fruit in soft rice paper and dip in a peanut and soybean sauce. It takes its name from the Ba Le well, whose water, Vietnam Tourism says, goes into cao lau noodles. Eat early to be at the show by 19:30.

The outdoor show on an island in the Hoai River tells 400 years of Hoi An's history in five acts with nearly 500 performers, from 20:00 to 21:00 every night except Tuesday. The operator asks you to check in 30 minutes before. If rain is likely, pay for VIP: it is the only class under the roof. Book a day or two ahead in high season.

Tips for Hoi An

  • Ask at the ticket booth which Ancient Town price applies: Da Nang's council set VND 20,000 per building from 10 August 2026, but the heritage centre still posts its VND 120,000 ticket for five entries, valid up to three days; children under 16 pay nothing.
  • The Ancient Town's streets close to motor vehicles from 09:00 to 21:00 in winter and to 21:30 in summer; walk or cycle in.
  • October and November are the wettest months: in late October 2025 floodwater filled the Ancient Town and restaurants closed, so in autumn keep a flexible day and check the forecast before the My Son and Cham Islands trips.
  • Cu Lao Cham boats are weather-dependent from October to February; plan the island day for March to September and swap in the Folk Culture and Sa Huynh museums if the sea is rough.
  • Each Ancient Town museum closes on two set days a month (Trade Ceramics on the 11th and 26th), and the Hoi An Museum on Tran Hung Dao is closed until further notice.
  • Order tailored clothes on your first day, agree the price and the fitting times in writing, and leave a spare day before you fly.
  • The 01DL tourist bus to My Son is suspended for six months from 15 September 2026: book a car, ride, or join a tour, and leave by 06:00 to beat the heat.

Getting there, where to stay and the weather by month are on the Hoi An page. Plan checked 24 October 2026.
