Sa Pa itinerary: how to spend 1, 2 or 3 days

Sa Pa rewards a slow pace and an early start, because fog decides what you see. Base yourself in Sa Pa town, near the church square, so you can walk to Sun Plaza for the Fansipan railway and down to Cat Cat; spend a night in a valley homestay if you can. Day 1 takes the cable car to the summit and walks Cat Cat, Day 2 follows the Muong Hoa valley down to Lao Chai and Ta Van, and Day 3 drives up to Silver Waterfall and the O Quy Ho pass. September to November brings golden terraces and clearer skies. Book the night train or bus from Hanoi first, then a guide for the valley walk.

How many days

  • 1 day: Day 1

Fansipan by cable car while the morning is clearest, then Cat Cat village and dinner in town; it leaves out the rice-terrace walk in the Muong Hoa valley.

  • 2 days: Days 1 to 2

Adds the Muong Hoa valley walk to Lao Chai and Ta Van, the rice-terrace day most visitors come for; sleep in Ta Van if you can.

  • 3 days: Days 1 to 3

Adds Silver Waterfall and the O Quy Ho pass on the road to Lai Chau; on a Sunday, swap Day 3 for the Bac Ha market instead.

Day 1

Fansipan, Cat Cat village and Sa Pa town

The cable car to the top of Fansipan as early as it runs, before the cloud builds, lunch back in town, the walk down to Cat Cat in the afternoon, then the church square at dusk and a hotpot dinner.

Muong Hoa mountain railway at Sun Plaza

Cost: Return fare on the Muong Hoa railway, Sun Plaza to the cable car station

Sun World's Muong Hoa mountain railway leaves from Sun Plaza in the centre of town and climbs to the Fansipan cable car station; a return costs VND 200,000. If you would rather save it, the station is 3 km by road, about 5 minutes in a Grab car or taxi. Buy the cable car ticket here or online. Dress for the summit, not the town: at 3,143 m it is often near freezing in winter, with frost or even ice.

The 6 km cable car lifts you to the summit station in about 15 minutes. From there walk up through the pagoda complex and climb the last steps to the 3,143 m summit marker, or pay extra for the short funicular. From 28 September 2026 cars go up from 8:00 to 14:30 Monday to Thursday, 8:00 to 15:30 on Friday, 7:30 to 15:30 on Saturday and 7:30 to 14:30 on Sunday; the last car down leaves at 16:00 or 17:00. Hours change with the weather, so check Sun World's notices.

    Lunch near Sa Pa market

    Cost: Prices per dish

Sa Pa's year-round cool water lets farms in the surrounding hills raise salmon and sturgeon, rare in Vietnam, and salmon salad is the lighter of the two dishes the town is known for; keep the sturgeon hotpot for dinner. The streets around Sa Pa market, on Luong Dinh Cua, have small restaurants serving both, alongside noodle soups and rice dishes. Warm up here before the walk: Cat Cat is downhill, and the climb back up is the hard part.

About 55 min walk, 4.3 km. Down Fansipan street to the Cat Cat gate, about 2 km, all downhill.

    Cat Cat village

Cost: Entry ticket at the gate; no official price published, so check there

Cat Cat is a Hmong village 2 km below the town, settled in the middle of the 19th century on the slopes under the Hoang Lien range, and Vietnam's tourism board names it as one of the villages you can visit without a guide. Paths lead down between the houses and terraces to the stream at the bottom of the valley. They are steep and slippery after rain, and the climb back up takes longer than the walk down, so keep an hour in hand or arrange a ride back up before you set off.

The stone church on the main square, Our Lady of the Rosary, belongs to a parish French missionaries founded in 1902; its church was built in 1925, and most of today's parishioners are Hmong. Come at dusk, when the light goes quickly behind the mountains and the town lights come on. This is also when the temperature drops sharply: in December and January the monthly mean is under 10°C, so carry a warm layer even if the afternoon was mild.

Sturgeon hotpot dinner by Sa Pa lake

Cost: Fish priced by weight; ask before ordering

Sturgeon hotpot is Sa Pa's best-known dinner: the firm, almost boneless fish is cooked at the table in a simmering broth with local greens, and a cold evening is the time for it. Restaurants on the streets around Sa Pa lake and the church serve it; the fish is sold by weight, so ask the price per kilo and see it weighed. Order the local vegetables too: Sa Pa's cabbages and greens are known across the country. Go to bed early for the valley walk.

Day 2

The Muong Hoa valley walk to Lao Chai and Ta Van

The rice-terrace day: about 10 km downhill from town into the Muong Hoa valley, a long lunch in Ta Van, then a taxi back up, or a night in a homestay.

Meet your guide on the church square

Cost: Guide fees vary; agree the price and the route first

Vietnam's tourism board recommends an overnight trek through the rice terraces, and the valley walk is easier with a local guide, who knows the field paths that keep you off the road. Agree the price, the route and whether lunch and the ride back are included before you set off. Wear boots with grip and take rain gear. If a stream is high after heavy rain, turn back rather than cross: the province told people not to cross flooded streams or spillways in September 2026.

Lao Chai spreads along the slope above the Muong Hoa stream, with the terraces dropping in steps below the houses; in autumn the rice turns gold before the harvest. Cost: Usually included in a guided trek; otherwise priced per dish

Ta Van, across the stream from Lao Chai, has homestays that serve lunch to walkers; on a guided trek, ask whether it is included. If you are staying the night, this is where you drop your bag. The tourism board points to homestays and lodges among the rice terraces as the way to see the valley's daily life up close, and the evening, after the day walkers have gone back up to town, is the quietest time to be here.

About 5 min walk, 0.3 km. Into the village.

You will meet buffalo on the paths; give them room. Rain is the risk from May to September, and in late September 2025 a storm stranded about 3,800 foreign visitors in Sa Pa, so in the wet season keep an eye on the forecast and ask your guide before setting out.

Ta Van is about 12 km from town by road. Your guide or homestay can call a taxi or a motorbike taxi; agree the fare before you get in. Green SM electric taxis also run in the province, and local firms such as Mai Linh charge by the kilometre. If you stay the night instead, have dinner with the family and walk on in the morning towards the villages further down the valley, then ride back to town.

About 10 min by taxi or Grab, 10.6 km. About 12 km up the valley road to the town centre.

Back in town, the streets around the market and the lake have noodle soups, rice dishes and hotpot; if you had sturgeon last night, try the salmon, the other cold-water fish raised in the hills around Sa Pa. After a day on the trails, a hot shower and an early night beat the bars. If you came on the night train, book your return now: SP16 leaves Lao Cai at 21:25 and SP4 at 21:50, both reaching Hanoi before 06:00.

Thac Bac, the Silver Waterfall, drops more than 200 m beside Highway 4D, about 12 km north-west of town, at the head of the Muong Hoa stream under the O Quy Ho pass. On a clear day you can see its white streak from Ham Rong mountain in town, which gave it the name, and the area is one of the places around Sa Pa where snow falls most heavily in a cold winter. In the cold months fog is often thickest early and late in the day, so the late morning gives you the best chance of a view.

Eat near the church square or the market, where noodle soups and rice dishes are quick after a morning in the car. If the summit was in cloud on Day 1 and the sky is clear now, this is your second chance at Fansipan: the cable car keeps running until 14:30 on most days, 15:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Otherwise, rest and warm up before the market. Sa Pa's cool weather makes a hot noodle soup the obvious choice at lunch.

If you are leaving tonight, the night trains to Hanoi leave Lao Cai, 33 km and about 25 minutes by taxi down the mountain, and the sleeper buses leave from their offices in the town centre; Sa Pa has no airport. Agree any taxi fare before you get in, especially late at night.

Tips for Sa Pa

  • Fog decides what you see: Sa Pa averages about 8 fog days in October and 17 in January. Go up Fansipan on the first clear morning, and keep a second day free in winter.
  • September to November is the best time, with golden terraces and clear skies; March to May is mild and in flower. July is the wettest month, at about 460 mm, and December and January average under 10°C, with frost and sometimes ice on Fansipan.
  • Fansipan cable car hours from 28 September 2026: up from 8:00 to 14:30 Monday to Thursday, to 15:30 on Friday and Saturday (from 7:30 at weekends), down until 16:00 or 17:00. Return fare VND 850,000 for adults from outside Lao Cai province.
  • In the rainy season, do not cross flooded streams or spillways: the province ordered this before heavy rain in September 2026, and a storm in late September 2025 stranded about 3,800 foreign visitors in Sa Pa.
  • Agree every fare before you get in. A traveller who took an unpriced ride from the bus station late at night in 2026 was charged VND 800,000 for five minutes, and Grab may not answer late at night; arrange the hotel pickup in advance.
  • On a Sunday, swap Day 3 for the Bac Ha market, about 97 km by road, a little under 2 hours each way, where traders from the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay and Thai peoples come in traditional dress.
  • From Hanoi, SP3 and SP7 night trains reach Lao Cai early in the morning, and bus 01 runs from the station square to the church in Sa Pa for VND 26,000; book berths before anything else, as the ticket site sells only these two trains.

Getting there, where to stay and the weather by month are on the Sa Pa page. Plan checked 24 October 2026.
