Dragon Bridge (Cau Rong)

VerdictPlan a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night in Da Nang for it: the 21:00 show is short, free and fun.

Time your Da Nang nights around this. The Dragon Bridge is a six-lane road bridge across the Han River built in the shape of a dragon reaching for the sea, and at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, plus major holidays, it breathes fire and then sprays water. The show is short: two minutes of fire, then three minutes of water. There's no ticket. If your stay is Monday to Thursday, you'll only see the lights.

What to look for

The head. The dragon breathes from its head, so that's the end we'd want to be near, and we'd get there by 20:30 on a show night to pick a spot.

The water part. The fire gets the photos, but the water is the bigger show: not a solid jet but a strong blast of spray, 20 cubic metres of water for each three-minute run. If you're standing close to the head with a camera, step back once the fire stops.

The bridge by day. It's a fair walk across, with two pedestrian lanes. In daylight it's just a striking bridge; we wouldn't make a separate trip for it.

The city started building the bridge on 19 July 2009 and opened it on 29 March 2013, nearly four years later. It weighs nearly 9,000 tonnes and cost VND 1,739 billion. It links the side of the river with the airport to the beaches on the east side.

How many chances you get, worked out. There are seven possible two-night stays in a week, by arrival day. Four of them (arriving Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday) include at least one show night; arrive on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and leave two nights later, and you'll miss it.

Getting there

The bridge sits in central Da Nang. In a straight line it's about 3.5 km from the airport, about 450 m from the Museum of Cham Sculpture and about 850 m from Han Market. That's a 6-minute walk from the museum at an easy 4.5 km/h, so the museum (open to 17:00), dinner and the 21:00 show make one evening.

Questions travelers ask

Is the show worth staying up for? Opinions split. Under a post of the show on r/VietNam:

"Love it when the dragon shoots the water and all the people on the bridge start running and screaming."

u/FantasyConcierge on r/VietNam

And in a thread where a traveler ranked Vietnam's sights:

"I was writing about the Fire and Water Dragon Bridge show on weekends. Most overhyped event I've seen."

We side with the first, as long as you're not making a special trip: it's free, it's five minutes, and you're probably in the centre anyway.

Our take

Worth building a weekend night around, not worth a special trip on a weekday. Pair it with the Cham museum and a riverside dinner and it's the easiest good evening in the city.

A note on schedules: Wikipedia still lists Saturday and Sunday only; the city tourism office and an August 2026 VnEconomy report both give Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and that's what we use. Holiday schedules change: for Tet 2025 the city ran the show every night from 24 January to 2 February, with only water at midnight on New Year's Eve.

How we checked this: show times, sequence and the bridge figures from Da Nang's city tourism portal (14 March 2025), the Friday-to-Sunday schedule confirmed in VnEconomy (19 August 2026), the design and opening date from Wikipedia. The walking time is our arithmetic from the straight-line distance at 4.5 km/h; distances are our calculation from Wikidata and OpenStreetMap coordinates. Checked 13 October 2026.
