Han Market

VerdictWorth an hour for lunch and the fabric aisle, not for bargains. Come early for the fish, after 10:00 for souvenirs.

Da Nang's central market: fabric, ao dai tailors, dried seafood and a food court.

Give Han Market an hour, mostly for lunch and the fabric aisle, and don't come expecting bargains. It's Da Nang's main central market, two floors on a 3,000 m² block between Tran Phu and Bach Dang streets, near the Han River. Vietnam Airlines' city guide puts the hours at 06:00 to 19:00 every day, with locals buying fish and vegetables first thing and tour groups arriving from about 09:00. If you're buying clothes or souvenirs, wait until after 10:00: some stallholders believe the day's first customer sets their luck, and they won't enjoy hard bargaining before then.

What to look for

The fabric and ao dai stalls. Bolts of silk and linen, ready-made ao dai, and tailors who'll make one to fit. Ready-made ao dai run from about VND 150,000 to 500,000. How fast a tailored one comes back depends on who you ask: the city portal's English page says "within an hour", its Vietnamese page says a little over half an hour, and the airline's guide says one to two days. We'd order on day one of a stay and collect later, so a slow tailor doesn't cost you anything.

Mam and dried seafood. The food side sells the region's fermented pastes (mam nem, mam ruoc, mam tom chua) in sealed jars at about VND 50,000 to 120,000, next to dried squid, dried shrimp and beef jerky. Check that a jar is sealed before it goes in a suitcase.

The food court. The centralised food court serves Da Nang standards: banh beo, mi Quang, nem lui, banh canh and the small, crisp local banh xeo. It's the reason we'd come at lunchtime.

Fresh produce and seafood. Halibut, stingray, clams, squid and crab are kept alive in tubs, and the vegetable stalls are busiest early.

A little history. A 17th-century route map already lists "Han Quang Market" as a stop between Hai Van and Hoi An. Under the French the market got stalls, kiosks and its own goods station, Tourane Marché. The building you walk into dates from the post-war rebuild: the city portal gives 1990, the airline's guide 1989.

A shopping run worked out. One ready-made ao dai and two jars of mam come to VND 250,000 at the cheap end (150,000 + 2 × 50,000) and VND 740,000 at the top (500,000 + 2 × 120,000). Add a sedge or rattan basket, VND 80,000 to 300,000, and you're between VND 330,000 and 1,040,000. Bargaining 40 to 50% off the first price is normal here, so treat the top figures as asking prices.

Getting there

The market fills the block between Tran Phu, Bach Dang, Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets in Hai Chau, in the city centre near the Han River swing bridge. A ride-hailing car inside the centre costs about VND 40,000 to 70,000. From My Khe Beach it's 5.3 km and about 7 minutes by road. From the airport it's about 3.8 km in a straight line.

Questions travelers ask

Can you get an ao dai made there, and for how much? In a February 2026 thread on r/DaNang about ao dai for men:

"Heck, Han Market you can get it made there for 20USD... 15 if you bargain"

u/berger034 on r/DaNang

And on bargaining at Da Nang's markets in general:

"First number is always wildly off and is complete bs. Definitely haggle."

u/cocoaLemonade22 on r/DaNang

Both fit the usual advice to bargain 40 to 50% off the first price. We'd ask two or three fabric stalls before agreeing a price, and ask when it'll be ready before paying.

Our take

We'd pair Han Market with the Museum of Cham Sculpture: museum when it opens, lunch at the market's food court, souvenirs after 10:00, then a walk to the river. It's a working market rather than a show, which is the point. Don't make a special trip just to shop: you'll be bargaining down from asking prices, and the best buy is the food.

How we checked this: the size, the 1990 rebuild, the four bordering streets, the ao dai claims and the history from Da Nang's city tourism portal (English page 28 September 2024, plus the Vietnamese page and the January 2025 Tet notice); hours, busy times, the first-customer custom, prices for ao dai, mam, crafts and taxis, the food court dishes and the 1989 date from Vietnam Airlines' Han Market guide, which carries no date. The shopping totals are our arithmetic, the drive is our OSRM routing, and straight-line distances are our calculation from OpenStreetMap, Wikidata and OurAirports coordinates.
