Alexandre Yersin found the Lam Vien Plateau in 1893. In 1916 the court at Hue announced the establishment of Da Lat town.
In the 1890s explorers, Yersin among them, asked the French governor-general Paul Doumer to create a resort in the highlands, and he agreed. The intended site was originally Dankia, but Etienne Tardif of the 1898 to 1899 road-building expedition proposed the present one. A hotel followed in 1907, and Ernest Hebrard carried out the urban planning.

Alexandre Yersin introduced cacao and coffee to Indochina. Coffee is among the products Da Lat is known for today.
Yersin also pioneered rubber cultivation: in 1897 he obtained a concession for an agricultural station at Suoi Dau. In 1915 he opened a station at Hon Ba, where he acclimatised the quinine tree, imported from the Andes. His trees let Indochina meet its quinine needs during the Second World War, and coffee is now among the products Da Lat supplies.

Da Lat sits 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level on the Langbiang Plateau.
The cool height explains the nickname City of Eternal Spring: the average temperature is 14 to 23 °C, and mist covers the adjoining valleys almost year round. The plateau lies in the southern part of the Central Highlands. Da Lat ceased to be a municipal city on 1 July 2025, when district-level units were eliminated.
