Phu Quy
A small volcanic island 56 nautical miles off Phan Thiet, reached only by fast boat, with fishing harbours, wind turbines and quiet bays, and few visitors from abroad.

VerdictGo in March or April, sleep in Phan Thiet the night before the boat, and give the island two nights; from November to March the north-east wind often stops the boats.
Phu Quy (Phú Quý) suits travelers who want a working fishing island more than a beach resort. It has one main ring road, fishing harbours, guesthouses rather than large resorts, and a long crossing that is often rough. Few foreigners make it: of the 169,266 visitors from January to September 2026, 5,076 came from abroad. Since July 2025 the island has been a special zone of Lam Dong province; until then it was a district of Binh Thuan, which many maps and booking pages still show.
A reporter for Bao Da Nang described a trip in October 2026. The Trung Trac fast boat took two and a half bumpy hours from Phan Thiet. On the island the reporter hired a colourful Cuxi scooter, a popular rental there, and found the wind blowing hard day and night, the banyan trees along the embankment bent to one side. At sunset the climb went from Linh Son pagoda, founded in 1848, to the top of Cao Cat, with the whole island below and its three white wind turbines. At Tam Thanh market there was juice pressed from wild pineapples, and the stallholders kept repeating one line: "Here, everything is the same price, whether you're an islander or a tourist." At Linh Quang, the island's oldest pagoda, a woman met at the service drove the reporter to an elderly islander's house and waited to bring them back.
What we would make time for: the climb up Cao Cat from Linh Son pagoda in the late afternoon, for the sunset over the island; a swim at Bai Nho, near the Ganh Hang cliff, keeping back from the edge of the rock pool people call the infinity pool, where waves can pull you into the sea; an afternoon at Trieu Duong bay, about a kilometre from the port, where islanders swim; Van An Thanh, by the port, for its 20 m whale skeleton (phone ahead, it is not always open); and the lighthouse on Cam mountain, free though a small donation is welcome, where you leave the scooter at the foot of the hill. Your guesthouse can book a canoe, about 10 minutes, to the islets of Hon Tranh and Hon Den for snorkelling.

How the last column is decided
These limits are ours; the source tables do not set them. A month is Drier when it has under 100 mm of rain, no more than 12 rainy days and fewer than 10 foggy days. Otherwise it is Wet (over 250 mm), Foggy (10 or more foggy days), Showery (15 or more rainy days) or Mixed. A month near one of these limits could almost have the next label, so read the numbers.
The icon beside each label pictures the month. The sun fills it at 7 or more hours of sunshine a day (the month's total over its days), sits behind cloud from 5 hours, peeks out from 3 and gives way to two clouds below that. Drops start at 50 mm of rain and grow to four long ones at 500 mm or more. A foggy month shows fog lines; a broken ring means no sunshine figure. The sun is yellow, orange in a sunny month and red when that month is also hot (a mean of 28°C or more); drops go from light to dark blue as the rain grows. The dot beside the label is the drier, mixed or wet colour of the homepage board.
The source does not define a “rain day”. Crowds, prices and storms are not part of this table.
The source does not say which years these averages cover. The regulation does not state the observation period of these tables.

Getting to Phu Quy
Phu Quy has no airport. Everyone arrives by fast boat from the passenger port in Phan Thiet, at the end of Pham Van Dong Street by the mouth of the Ca Ty river, to Phu Quy port in Tam Thanh, the main town. Phan Thiet's own airport is still being built and is aimed at opening at the end of 2027; until then the nearest airports with flights are Lien Khuong near Da Lat, Cam Ranh and Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City.
Where are you coming from?
Our pick from Phan Thiet: Book Superdong: it sails once a day each way, at an hour set by the tide, between 05:30 and 11:30 from Phan Thiet on the November dates we read. Mai Linh Express also sails daily but publishes no times or fares online, and Phu Quoc Express had no November sailings on sale.

By boat
The Phu Quy port management board publishes a timetable each month. For November 2026 it lists Superdong's two boats and Mai Linh Express every day, usually two sailings from Phan Thiet and two back, at hours that move with the tide: from Phan Thiet anywhere between 04:45 and 11:30, from Phu Quy between 07:30 and 14:00. Superdong sells online, with one sailing each way a day on the dates we read, at VND 343,636 for an adult and VND 392,727 for a VIP ticket. Mai Linh Express publishes no times or fares on its site; its number is 0967 782 972. Phu Quoc Express's catamaran Trung Trac, VND 370,000 (VIP 450,000), had no November sailings on sale when we checked, so look again for later months.
The crossing is 56 nautical miles: about 2 hours on a calm sea, 2½ hours or more in the north-east monsoon, by Phu Quoc Express's figures. VnExpress quotes veteran captains who count it among the roughest sea routes in Vietnam, with waves from the side, and crews hand out sick bags before leaving, so take a seasickness tablet and eat something light first. From November to March the wind can stop sailings for days: in November 2025 the Superdong boats stayed in port from the 20th to the 22nd and Trung Trac from the 19th to the 26th, and the boats stopped again over New Year. Keep a spare day before any flight home.
Book a few days ahead, and be at the port 45 minutes before the boat with your passport. The name on the e-ticket has to match your ID exactly, and a border guard post at Phu Quy port checks everyone coming and going. Foreign visitors have not needed a permit since September 2020.

Getting to Phan Thiet
Most boats leave Phan Thiet early, so plan to arrive the day before. From Ho Chi Minh City, Futa (Phuong Trang) runs limousine buses of four to four and a half hours from Mien Tay, Mien Dong Moi and An Suong bus stations, about two dozen a day between them, from 06:00, for VND 230,000 to 240,000. They stop at Nam Phan Thiet bus station, 64 Tran Quy Cap, five minutes by taxi from the port, before going on to Mui Ne.
Vietnam Railways' SPT2 leaves Saigon station at 06:45 and reaches Phan Thiet at 10:42, from VND 211,000 for a soft seat, but until 30 December 2026 it runs only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Phan Thiet station is about seven minutes by taxi from the port. From Da Lat, Futa has two buses a day, at 07:00 and 14:00, about five and a half hours to Bac Phan Thiet bus station. It has no bus from Nha Trang to Phan Thiet.
Getting around Phu Quy
The port is in Tam Thanh, with the market next door and Van An Thanh a short walk away. Scooter renters and guesthouse owners wait at the port gate holding name boards. VnExpress's guide says the island has no taxis, so most visitors rent a scooter from their guesthouse, at VND 100,000 to 120,000 a day by its figures; one tank of fuel covers the whole island, which has one main ring road. The national tourism authority says your host can also arrange a car. ATMs are scarce, so bring cash from Phan Thiet, and keep a hand on hats and bags, because the wind is strong.

Where to stay in Phu Quy
Phu Quy has guesthouses, small hotels and homestays, and no large resorts. Tam Thanh, the busiest part of the island around the port and the market, puts you a short walk from the boat, the market and Van An Thanh, and about a kilometre from Trieu Duong bay. Ngu Phung, on the west side, is nearer the lighthouse, and Long Hai, in the north, has Cao Cat, Linh Son pagoda and the morning fish market. All three were communes until July 2025, and islanders still use the names. Wherever you stay, the far side of the island is about a quarter of an hour away by scooter. We don't rank hotels.
Fun facts about Phu Quy

Image: Theodore Nguyen / Pexels An engineer from EVN's design consultancy called Phu Quy the best island in Vietnam for wind power, with the country's highest average wind speed, over 10 metres a second.
PV Power, the state oil group's power company, put three turbines of 6 MW in all on the island and started selling their electricity on 25 August 2012. Before that, a 3 MW diesel plant ran only 16 hours a day. A year later EVN reported islanders still had power for 16 hours, and an expert it quoted thought the turbines too big for the island's demand.
Source: EVN (Vietnam Electricity), Wind power on the islands, 4 July 2013, PV Power, Phu Quy wind farm starts commercial operation, 27 August 2012. Checked October 2026.
Islanders gave a full funeral to a whale that washed up on Phu Quy in 1941, and its skeleton, about 20 m long, is kept at the Van An Thanh whale temple.
Fishermen along this coast worship the whale as a protector, and islanders still tell of whales guiding boats through storms. Van An Thanh, near the main port, is one of Phu Quy's two national historical and cultural relics, with Linh Quang pagoda, among 34 places of worship on the island. It is not always open, so the tourism authority suggests phoning ahead.

Hon Hai, a rock islet off Phu Quy, is point A6 of the straight baseline from which Vietnam has measured its territorial sea since its declaration of 12 November 1982.
The baseline is a chain of straight lines joining headlands and outlying islets along the coast, and the waters Vietnam claims are counted outward from it. Hon Hai is the point between Bay Canh off Con Dao and Hon Doi off Khanh Hoa. Tuoi Tre's reporter needed a permit and two days at sea, waiting out the waves, to reach it.

Questions travelers ask about Phu Quy
When is the best time to visit Phu Quy? March or April. At the Phú Quý weather station, 3 km from the port, January to April are the driest months, with 5 to 42 mm of rain and fewer than five rainy days each, and March and April are the sunniest of the year. The tourism authority calls March and April the best months to swim, when the sea is calm. From November to March the north-east monsoon makes the crossing rougher and stops it on some days. October is the wettest month, at 234 mm, and six of the nine tropical storms that passed within 150 km of the island from 1991 to 2025 came in November or December.
Do foreigners need a permit to visit Phu Quy? No, not since September 2020, when Binh Thuan dropped the permit that had taken three to four days to get. Bring your passport and a valid visa, because the border guard at the port checks ID. If you want to camp overnight, VnExpress advises asking your guesthouse to arrange the residence paperwork first.
How many days do you need on Phu Quy? Three days and two nights cover the main island, with parts of two days spent on the boat, says VnExpress's guide; four or five days add the islets around it. A day trip does not work: the boats back usually leave Phu Quy within a few hours of the first boats arriving.
