Sapa Church was built in 1925.
Sa Pa began as a hill resort station for French colonists, who found the cool, high plateau climate ideal for escaping the heat. They equipped the town with railways and European-style hotels and villas for the elite, so it worked as a European enclave. Between 1938 and 1939 approximately 3,000 tourists visited.

Fansipan formed about 250 to 260 million years ago, around the boundary between the Permian and Triassic periods.
The age places it between the Permian period in the Paleozoic era and the Triassic period in the Mesozoic. The Himalayan orogeny since the Late Mesozoic then uplifted Fansipan and the Hoang Lien Son range further, and it also created the Red River Fault to the east.
