The Ho Chi Minh Museum stands about 0.2 km west of the mausoleum, in the same Ba Dinh complex. It opened in 1990 and tells Ho Chi Minh's life in eight chronological exhibitions, starting with his youth from 1890 and ending with a group on his status as a national hero. Wikipedia counts more than 170,000 documents, objects and films in the collection, and says labels come in English and French as well as Vietnamese.

Getting there
Measured in a straight line on map coordinates, the museum is about 1.5 km from Hanoi railway station and about 2.2 km from Hoan Kiem Lake. Noi Bai International Airport is about 21 km away in a straight line; the road is longer.
The museum sells tickets at its own Gate 1 and at the gate at 19 Ngoc Ha Street.

Our take
It keeps the mausoleum's Monday and Friday closures, but it also opens in the afternoon. That's why we'd treat it as the fallback: reach Ba Dinh after the mausoleum's late-morning cut-off and this is the part of the complex you can still get into.

Questions travelers ask
Is the museum included with the mausoleum? A traveler who walked the Ba Dinh complex wrote:
"Inside the square, the Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Stilt House are two separate and paid attractions."

Is it on locals' lists? Asked for cultural things to do in Hanoi, one reply named it among four:
"Museum of Ethnology, Women’s Museum, Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Museum."
