Vietnamese Women's Museum

VerdictOur pick for an awkward Hanoi day: open daily with no lunch break, and the audio guide speaks six languages.

A four-storey museum on women in Vietnamese family life, history and fashion.

The Vietnamese Women's Museum is a four-storey building at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, south of Hoan Kiem Lake. The government established it on 10 January 1987, and it opened on 20 October 1995. It closed for redevelopment and refurbishment from 2006 to 2010. The Vietnam Women's Union funds and runs it.

The permanent displays follow three themes: Women in Family, Women in History and Women's Fashion. The museum's audio guide tells close to 60 stories across those three themes, in Vietnamese, English, French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

Getting there

Measured in a straight line on map coordinates, the museum is about 0.6 km from Hoan Kiem Lake and about 1.1 km from Hanoi railway station. Noi Bai International Airport is about 22 km away in a straight line; the road is longer.

Hours and fees

The museum's website does not publish ticket prices. Two travel sites we checked, VinWonders (in an article updated for 2026) and Vietnam Discovery, both give VND 40,000 for an adult. They disagree on student and child rates, so we leave those out. Check the price at the desk.

The museum also has an outdoor café serving coffee, smoothies and light snacks.

Our take

When the rest of your Hanoi day doesn't line up, this is the museum we'd reach for. It opens every day of the week with no lunch break, and the audio guide covers six languages, so you aren't relying on the wall labels alone.

Questions travelers ask

Is it worth it if you only have a day or two? Under a photo post from the museum, one commenter wrote:

"Well worth a visit especially if you don't have time to travel and visit the larger Museum of Ethnology"

Is it only for women? In a thread on Hanoi must-sees, one reply:

"I found the women's museum to be fascinating (I'm a guy) and was really impressed by it."
