Best time to visit Ninh Binh: clear November, grey March
February and March look dry on paper and are Ninh Binh's greyest months. The clear ones come at the end of the year.
VerdictGo in November or December, with under 70 mm of rain and the fewest rain days; late May only if the golden rice is worth highs of 31°C.
The best time to visit Ninh Binh, going by the weather, is the end of the year. In November and December the rain is light, rain days are the fewest of the year and the sun is out two to three times as long as in March. February and March have under 50 mm of rain each, yet they are the greyest months, with about 45 hours of sun a month and the most drizzle in the calendar. The figures come from the Ninh Bình weather station, which stands in Ninh Binh city itself.

At the start of January 2026, one traveller spent five days in Ninh Binh and wrote it up afterwards on r/VietNam as a winter guide. Cool weather did not mean empty sights. Tour buses were dropping 50 to 60 people at once, and at Hang Mua, the viewpoint above Tam Coc, it was "impossible to actually climb up the stairs without someone breathing on your neck," they wrote, with the way down worse than the way up. Trang An was crowded as well, and still one of the best parts of the trip. The place they told others to put first was Thung Nham, "not very crowded and more of a local scene."
The twelve months
This is Ninh Binh weather by month as the station records it. The station is called Ninh Bình, listed at 2 m in the regulation's station table, and the regulation counts drizzle days separately from rain days.
| Month | Mean °C | Low to high °C | Rain mm | Rain days | Drizzle days | Sun hours |

November and December: the clear end of the year
November has 67.3 mm of rain on 7.8 days, and December 28.6 mm on 6.3 days, the fewest rain days of any month. Highs average 25.3°C in November and 21.7°C in December, about 78°F and 71°F. November gets 127.8 hours of sun, a little over four hours a day, and December 108.5, about three and a half. Humidity is at its lowest of the year in these two months, 80.9% and 80.7%.
December is cool. Its lows average 15.9°C, it has the most fog days of the year at 2.6, and the coldest December reading in the record is 5.8°C, so bring a layer for an early boat. The Ninh Binh page has the sights, tickets and the same station table, and the Hanoi to Ninh Binh train guide covers the ride down from the capital. Flying in from elsewhere in Vietnam, check the closest airport to Ninh Binh first.

January to March: cool, then grey
January is the coolest month, with a mean of 16.6°C (about 62°F) and lows of 14.6°C, and the coldest reading in the whole record is 5.4°C. It is still fairly dry, 27.9 mm of rain on 9 days, with 69.9 hours of sun.
"Cooler weather and sometimes even cold at night, but the tradeoff here was that it wasn't hot at all when we went on the water as well as walking around the pagodas or cycling."

February and March are far darker. February has 45.1 hours of sun and March 44.2, under an hour and a half a day in March. Rain totals stay small, 26.4 mm and 46.3 mm, but this is drizzle season: 9.6 drizzle days in February and 11.9 in March, and 30.2 of the year's 32.4 drizzle days fall between January and April. March also has 16.4 rain days, the most of any month and more than August's 16.1, on less than a sixth of August's rain. Humidity peaks at 89.4% in March. Is late May worth it for the golden rice?
It is the reason we would come in the hot half of the year. The rice around Tam Coc is gold by late May, and the province builds its tourism week around it. In 2026, Ninh Binh Tourism Week opened on the evening of 23 May, and on the morning of 24 May the Tam Coc Golden Season festival was held on the Ngo Dong river, among fields the provincial tourism site described as gold. The Department of Tourism also mentions lotus in early summer.
By then the weather is summer's. May has 169.3 mm of rain, highs of 31.1°C and 7.3 thunderstorm days, and it holds the hottest reading in the station's record, 40.4°C. It is sunny too, at 184.9 hours. June to August are hotter, with highs of 31.9°C to 32.9°C (up to about 91°F), and they bring the most thunderstorms, 9.1 days in August. The Trang An boat tour price guide has the Tam Coc and Trang An tickets and which boat to pick.

September: the wettest month, and when the boats stop
May to October carries 1,512.5 mm of the year's 1,783.5 mm, about 85%. September is the wettest month at 362.4 mm, with August next at 314.9 mm. The largest one-day rainfall in the record is 450.9 mm, in September, more than the month's whole average. October's one-day record is 431.3 mm, close to double its 219.1 mm average.
That rain closed boat routes twice in 2026. During Storm No. 4 in August, Trang An suspended its three regular routes from 21 August and ran an alternative route, then stopped all operations from 23 August until further notice, according to the Department of Tourism's update carried by VOV. At Tam Coc, visits to Hang Ba, one of the caves on the boat route, stopped from 8am on 24 August. On 16 September, after heavy rain raised the water in caves, Trang An suspended one route until further notice while the rest of the complex stayed open, and Thung Nham closed three caves, Tuoi Tre News reported. The department's advice was to check with the site or its official channels before setting out, because routes and ticket sales can change during the day.
Check a route's status on the day you go; both closures were 2026 events. For how storms reach the north, see our typhoon season guide, and north vs south Vietnam weather sets Hanoi's station beside the Mekong Delta's, month by month.

Our take
November is the month we'd pick: 7.8 rain days, highs near 25°C, and more sun than any month from December to April. December is a close second if you don't mind cooler days and the odd foggy morning. Late May is for the golden rice around Tam Coc, and you trade heat and thunderstorms for it. Avoid March if the views are the point, and if you come in August or September, keep a spare day in case the boats stop.
How we checked this
On 23 October 2026 we downloaded QCVN 02:2022/BXD again from the government site and matched every Ninh Bình value in this article to its row in 14 tables of the PDF. The seasonal totals, the share of rain from May to October, the hours of sun per day and the Fahrenheit figures are our own arithmetic on those rows. The same day we read the Ninh Binh Department of Tourism pages on Tourism Week 2026, the VOV and Tuoi Tre News closure reports, and the Reddit post through the Arctic Shift archive.
What this does not tell you
The regulation does not state the observation period of its tables or define a rain day. The station is in the city; Tam Coc and Trang An are a short drive away among the hills, and conditions there can differ. The rice dates are for 2026 and move with each year's crop. The closures are 2026 events and say nothing about the status of any route on your dates.
