Closest airport to Ha Giang: fly into Hanoi, then the bus

Ha Giang has no airport, and the nearest runway on the map is across the Chinese border. The one to book is in Hanoi.

VerdictFly into Hanoi's Noi Bai (HAN), 197 km away in a straight line, and take the bus from its terminal; the other airports are longer drives.

Ha Giang (Hà Giang) has no airport, and the closest airport to Ha Giang that works for a trip from abroad is Hanoi's Noi Bai (Nội Bài, HAN). Land there and take a bus from the terminal: they run in the morning and at night and drop you at your hotel in Ha Giang city, where the loop starts. The only runway with scheduled flights that is closer is Wenshan, across the border in China, and it only makes sense if you are already travelling in Yunnan. Dien Bien Phu and Hai Phong's Cat Bi come next on the map, and both are longer drives than Noi Bai.

Once you land at Noi Bai, the bus ride is the long part of the day. Oumaima D., who booked an airport bus to Ha Giang in October 2026, got a message on the day telling her where to wait. Someone from the company collected her and other travellers and took them to its office, and the bus ran from there to its office in Ha Giang, with a transfer on to her hotel. Changes weren't always clearly explained, she wrote, because of the language barrier. Seats are the usual complaint. In March, Axel L.'s group found no seats left at the airport pickup and rode behind the driver with no legroom, and Olivier B., 1.8 m tall, booked places at the front and was put at the back. On night rides people complain about the driving. Miguel A. described a driver weaving the whole way and no clear drop-off until a 5:00 a.m. arrival, and Emma M.'s group nearly missed their stop because nobody called it. The private car Daniel H. booked in February was the calm version, with a pleasant driver who drove safely. All of these reviews are on 12Go's Noi Bai to Ha Giang page.

The airports closest to Ha Giang

These are the four airports with scheduled flights closest to our Ha Giang map pin, with the road to Ha Giang city. The flights column is what ACV, the state airports operator, listed on its flight board for 27 October 2026. Wenshan is in China and not on that board.

The road times are the router's, with no traffic, so the buses take longer. For the same comparison across Vietnam, see our airports by destination guide.

Which airport for whom

As with Ninh Binh, the runway nearest on the map isn't the one to book.

Noi Bai is the answer for nearly everyone. Of the three Vietnamese airports it's the only one with long-haul flights: on the board we read, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Milan were among its destinations, with Seoul the busiest. The Ha Giang buses pick up inside its terminals, so you may not need to go into Hanoi at all.

Dien Bien Phu is closer than Cat Bi on the map and still the worst choice. Its only flights on the board were one each way with Hanoi, VN1804 landing at 14:55 and VN1805 leaving at 15:30, and the drive to Ha Giang is the longest of the four.

Cat Bi only helps if your flight lands there anyway, from Ho Chi Minh City or from Seoul, Macau, Guangzhou or Lijiang. By road it's almost two hours farther from Ha Giang than Noi Bai.

Wenshan is the closest on paper. Since Resolution 389/NQ-CP of 2 December 2025, the Thanh Thuy international border gate, 22 km by road north-west of Ha Giang city, has been one of the gates where foreigners can enter Vietnam on an e-visa. That makes Wenshan an option only for someone already travelling in Yunnan. We didn't check China's visa rules, Wenshan's flights or the road from Wenshan to the gate.

Noi Bai to Ha Giang: bus or private car

By bus from the terminal

Bang Phan (Bằng Phấn), a Ha Giang bus company, picks up at hall E on floor 2 of the domestic terminal and at pillar 20 on floor 1 of the international terminal. Its buses leave from 07:00 to 13:30 and again from 19:00 to 23:00, and the last airport pickup is at 23:30. Its routes page gives the fare from Noi Bai as from VND 250,000 and the trip as about six hours, with a free drop-off anywhere in Ha Giang city. If your flight is late, the company asks you to tell it 3 to 5 hours ahead, and it moves you to the next bus with seats free.

A bus that leaves at 23:00 gets in around 05:00, so if you land late, book a room you can check into at dawn. Landing in the afternoon gap is less of a problem than Bang Phan's hours suggest. 12Go listed 90 trips for 29 October, including buses leaving Noi Bai at 14:00 and 15:00 (Sapa Discovery Travel) and 18:00 (Vin Bus).

If you are tall, the cabin type matters more than the company. In an August 2026 r/VietNam thread a traveller of 6'2" asked about double cabins, and the replies said they are wider, not longer:

"The couple cabin on 12Go is usually the same 90 by 180 pod with two people in it, so at 6'2" I'd skip that one. Search Vexere for Bang Phan Royal Cabin or G8 and book a single upper cabin."

By private car

A car is the option for a landing outside the bus hours. On 12Go, a private car for up to three people was listed at VND 2,716,047 for 29 October, leaving at any time of day, with a running time of 4 h 30 min. Check that the booking is for a private car and not a seat in a shared van; the reviews in the story above show how different those rides are.

Arriving in Ha Giang city

Bang Phan drops you at your hotel in the city for free. Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province since 2025, so official notices carry the Tuyen Quang name, while the bus companies still sell tickets to Ha Giang. For the way back, Bang Phan's buses leave Ha Giang at 11:30, 14:00 and, the last one, 22:00. If you spend a night in Hanoi first, the same company picks up for free in the Old Quarter.

The Ha Giang page has the buses from Hanoi's bus stations and what to see on the loop, and Ha Giang loop weather in autumn covers September to November.

Will Ha Giang get its own airport?

Not under the current plan. Decision 1140/QĐ-BXD of 1 July 2026, the Ministry of Construction's revised national airport plan, lists 19 international and 17 domestic airports for 2021 to 2030, and 20 and 17 by 2050. None of them is in Ha Giang or the rest of Tuyen Quang. Two neighbours are on the list: Cao Bang, to the east, as an international airport, and Sa Pa as a domestic one.

Sa Pa's airport is not close to opening. Lao Dong reported on 14 July 2026 that the project, approved in October 2021, is still on paper: the land has been cleared, but several calls for bids have not found a builder. For Sa Pa today, the Hanoi to Sa Pa guide has the train and the bus.

Our take

Book Noi Bai and pick the bus by your landing time. Land in the morning and you can be in Ha Giang by evening, seeing the road in daylight. Land at night and the last airport pickup decides it: before 23:30 you get the night bus and a dawn arrival, after it you need a hotel near the airport or a car. Pay for a single cabin if you are tall, and confirm your seat number when you book. Ignore Cat Bi and Dien Bien Phu unless the flight is already booked, and leave Wenshan to people coming from China.

What we could not confirm

  • We read ACV's board for a single day, 27 October 2026; the board for 3 November was not out yet, and airlines change routes by season.
  • Bang Phan's routes page gives a "from" fare only, not the price of each cabin type from the airport.
  • The 12Go prices and times are for 29 October 2026 and change by date and operator.
  • We did not check the Chinese side of the Wenshan route: visas, flights, or the road to Thanh Thuy.

How we checked this

On 26 October 2026 we recomputed the straight-line distances from OurAirports coordinates, routed each airport and the Thanh Thuy gate to Ha Giang city on the public OSRM router, and read every flight on ACV's board for 27 October 2026. We read Bang Phan's pickup points, hours and fares on its own pages, the 12Go listing and reviews for 29 October, the airport plan on the Ministry of Construction's site, Resolution 389/NQ-CP on the government's document site, and Lao Dong's report on Sa Pa. The arrival story comes from the 12Go reviews linked in it, and the cabin advice from the r/VietNam thread linked above. The photographs are credited under each image.
